The cameras may be winding down, but the stories will continue to inspire.
As we wrap up our eight-week collaboration with Community Stepping Stones, I’m filled with gratitude for everything our young storytellers accomplished through WCSS—Welcome to Community Stepping Stones. What began as an introduction to storytelling and media production quickly became a place where students discovered confidence, creativity, and the power of working together.
Throughout the summer, our students learned how to use cameras, microphones, lighting, and interview techniques while exploring the building blocks of great storytelling. They created news reports, interviewed community members, produced public service announcements, shared artwork, celebrated their neighborhoods, and told stories that reflected their own experiences and interests.
Our Week 8 finale is especially meaningful because it gives students and staff the opportunity to look back on the journey. In their exit interviews, they reflect on what they learned, what they enjoyed most, and how working together helped them grow. Listening to their thoughts is a wonderful reminder that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Confidence, communication, creativity, collaboration, and compassion are all skills that will continue serving these young people long after summer ends.
I’m incredibly thankful to the dedicated staff, families, volunteers, and students at Community Stepping Stones for embracing this adventure with such enthusiasm. Their encouragement created an environment where every child felt supported and empowered to share their voice.
